Sulphur Creek Sandbar Project

Funds awarded:
$3,000

Project date:
1999

Sponsor:
Cantara Trustee Council

Project Description:
The 1997 emergency stabilization was successful in stopping erosion of the toe of the high vertical bank, but erosion and sloughing of soil was still occurring on the upper bank due to frost wedging and excessive soil saturation. In addition, a large sandbar had formed along the left bank, forcing the thalwag against the right bank, and causing further erosion to the highly unstable bank. Therefore, in 1998, SWAG obtained a $3,000 mini-grant from the Cantara Trustee Council to reshape the upper portion of the eroding bank to stable grade and plant it with vegetation, as well as to reconstruct a meandering channel consistent with the determined design stream type. Other objectives were to provide fish habitat features including pools, rootwads, riparian vegetation, and spawning gravel, and to provide public education opportunities through signage. The project was successfully completed as a cooperative effort between SWAG, Shasta College, Turtle Bay Museums and Arboretum on the River, and the Sulphur Creek CRMP.
