Old 99 Clean-a-thon
On April 27, 2002, in conjunction with the City of Redding's Earth Day Celebration, over 62 volunteers participated in the cleanup of Old 99, the site of one of SWAG's upcoming restoration projects.

Many thanks go out to all the volunteers who braved steep hills, broken glass, and the dreaded poison oak to haul over 6 tons of trash, shopping carts, mattresses, refrigerators, washers and 138 tires out of the creek bed and surrounding hillsides!

We'd also like to thank our sponsors, Raley's, Factory to U, Starbucks, and Jamba Juice, CalTrans, DWR, City of Redding, Shasta College, and Sulphur Creek CRMP for providing supplies and refreshments for everyone.

The students of Shasta College and Sequoia Middle School were extremely helpful, thanks to their instructors' Jeff Cummings, John McCullah and Kathy Callan! Shasta College provided the very useful backhoe!

Other volunteers provided trucks, and Officer Brannon of the Redding Police Department's Community Clean Up Program was there with his dump trailer and helped to get the dump fees waived!

CalTrans and The City of Redding provided the barricades to prevent future dumping up Old Highway 99!

Overall, we hauled 11,680 lbs (5.84 tons), which includes 138 tires (21 with rims), 2 refrigerators, 1 washer, 1 sofa, 10 mattresses, and 1.36 tons of roofing material. Not included in the total weight were an additional 30 shopping carts. The total dump fees donated by the Redding Police Department Community Cleanup Program was $748.22.
Thanks again to everyone who helped make the Clean-A-Thon a success, we look forward to seeing you on the new trail when it is completed sometime next fall!
